About
Spekedalen & Sølensjøen
A waterway for fishing, paddling and exploring one of Rendalen’s most distinctive mountain and cultural landscapes.
Speka is approximately 8 kilometres long and flows south from Spekedalen. It joins the Orva river and together they form the Sølna river. The fish population in Speka consists mainly of trout.
Further south lies Sølensjøen – a large mountain lake of approximately 23 km², situated around 688 metres above sea level. The lake is part of the Sølna river system and drains south towards the Femundselva river.
From trout in Speka to Arctic char and whitefish in Sølensjøen
Sølensjøen has a long fishing tradition and a rich variety of fish. Species include Arctic char, trout, grayling, whitefish, pike, burbot and perch. Fishing for Arctic char and whitefish has been an important part of life in the area for centuries.
A shared fishing licence covers a large part of the waterway, including Speka, the Speksjøene lakes, Orvsjøen, Sølna, Vesle Sølensjøen, Sølensjøen and several other lakes. This gives you access to a much larger fishing area than Sølensjøen alone.
Buy your fishing licence on Inatur →Fiskevollen
At the north-western end of Sølensjøen lies Fiskevollen – Norway’s largest and oldest inland fishing village.
Fishing has been carried out here for more than a thousand years. Fishing huts and boathouses stand together along the shore, telling the story of a time when fishing was an important part of life in Rendalen. Today, these traditions are still maintained, while Fiskevollen has become an important cultural and visitor destination.
Fiskevollen is approximately 30 kilometres from Øvre Rendal. The road crosses the mountains and is normally closed during winter, usually opening at the beginning of June. During the summer season, fishing licences and boat rental are available at the ranger station.
Bring a canoe or kayak
Spekedalen and Sølensjøen are not just places for anglers. The waterway is also an excellent area for paddling.
Inatur describes the waterway as excellent for paddling, with shelters, traditional open-fire huts and parking areas along parts of the route. It is an appealing way to experience the mountain landscape at a slower pace.
Explore fishing and the area on Fishspot →Sølen Landscape Protected Area
The Sølen Landscape Protected Area was established in 2011 and covers 456.4 km², entirely within Rendalen municipality. The area is protected because of its distinctive natural and cultural landscape and its significant ecological, cultural and recreational values.
The Sølen massif and parts of Sølensjøen are located within the protected area. The landscape also contains important cultural heritage connected to historic wild reindeer and elk hunting, while continuing to provide opportunities for low-impact outdoor recreation.
